Residency Programs

The Duke Department of Surgery residency programs provide exceptional training for physicians who are dedicated to making a difference in providing quality surgical care.

General Surgery Residency Program

The Duke General Surgery Residency Program is dedicated to providing a comprehensive training program. This encompasses the entire breadth of core general surgery and the general surgery subspecialties, which includes cardiothoracic, abdominal transplant, oncology, vascular, endocrine, colorectal, trauma, and pediatric surgery.

Integrated Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency Program

The Duke Division of Plastic, Maxillofacial, and Oral Surgery offers a six-year integrated residency training program that prepares physicians to become tomorrow’s leaders of academic plastic surgery. The program seeks individuals who are self motivated, with an established record of clinical excellence and academic productivity. It is hoped that those individuals who matriculate at Duke will represent us well wherever they practice.

Integrated Thoracic Surgery Residency Program

For over six decades, the Duke University Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery has trained the nation’s leaders in academic cardiovascular and thoracic surgery by immersing them in a dynamic clinical, teaching, and research enterprise. We are pleased to offer a six-year Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program, leading to eligibility for certification by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery.

Physician Assistant Surgical Residency Program

The physician assistant surgical residency is an intensive 13-month program administered by the department of surgery at Duke University Medical Center. PA surgical residents are members of the surgical team and are involved in preoperative, intra-operative, and postoperative patient care.

Traditional Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency

The training programs in cardiothoracic surgery at Duke University Medical Center are designed to develop academic cardiothoracic surgeons. We offer a traditional training program and have recently been approved by the ACGME to offer an integrated program.

Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Program

The Duke Vascular Surgery Integrated Residency Program includes training in open surgical techniques, endovascular interventions, diagnostic modalities (MR, CT, ultrasound, and PVRs), and related fields (cardiology, hematology, interventional radiology).
