The Duke Department of Surgery’s in-house team of communications experts provides effective, strategic, and integrated internal and external communications to support the Department’s core values and communications priorities.

Our team provides a consistent voice and singular branding across all departmental communications.

What We Do

Our team develops and implements communications strategies that prioritize:

  • Fostering a culture of equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging within Duke Surgery;
  • Strengthening internal communications with faculty, trainees, and staff;
  • Promoting individual and collaborative accomplishments of Duke Surgery’s multidisciplinary teams of researchers and clinicians;
  • Elevating the department’s renowned residency, fellowship, and training programs; and
  • Enhancing relationships with departmental alumni and the broader Duke and Durham communities.

We effectively implement these strategies through traditional, contemporary, and visual communications practices including:

  • Inter- and intra-departmental communications
  • Strategic collaboration with external partners
  • News and feature writing
  • Departmental website management
  • Social media management
  • Graphic design and medical illustration

Medical Illustration

The Surgery Communications Office also boasts a team of certified medical illustrators.

Trained in both medical science and art, our medical illustrators collaborate with faculty, trainees, and staff to enhance the communication of complex scientific concepts through clarifying visual imagery.
