About the Center

The Duke Center for Surgical Education and Innovation is a comprehensive, multidisciplinary center with surgeons who are experts in their field using state-of-the-art technology. The Center is dedicated to fostering collaboration and advancing education through research and innovative techniques in minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and microsurgery in many specialty areas with experienced surgeons.

The Center is fully equipped with dedicated, high-tech operating rooms, “connected” conference suites for viewing of surgical procedures at Duke and beyond, and practical “hands-on” laboratories utilizing the Human Fresh Tissue LabDuke Vivarium and the Surgical Education and Activities Lab. In addition, the Center offers the latest technologies in telemedicine, providing networked visual communications and video conferencing to connect the Center’s education facilities with virtually any center in the world.

Our Center of Excellence functions as the hub of educational efforts to demonstrate the latest surgical techniques for Duke residents, fellows, and faculty as well as visiting surgeons and trainees. Its rich history has resulted hundreds of surgeons, residents and fellows being trained and numerous presentations published. Duke University School of Medicine is consistently rated as one of the best academic medical centers in the nation, and our Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery Fellowship  is among the earliest established laparoscopic training programs in the United States. Many of our graduating fellows have assumed key faculty positions at a number of leading universities.

The Center is committed to Duke Surgery’s overall mission of excellence, innovation, and leadership in meeting the health care needs of the people we serve and fostering the very best medical education and biomedical research.
