Congratulations to General Surgery Resident Harold Leraas, MD, who will present his abstract, “Balanced RBC to plasma ratio is associated with decreased mortality risk in pediatric trauma patients receiving massive transfusion,” during the 2018 American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) National Conference and Exhibition.
Seven Duke Surgery Residents Receive 2018 Appleseed Training Awards
Seven residents were recently honored with the Appleseed Resident Training Award, a recognition to those who have “not only exceeded expectations of medical pedagogy, but have shown genuine passion for training the next generation of doctors.” Created in 2008 by medical students, the award is given to the top 10% of residents and interns in each core rotation who have positively impacted other trainees through education.

General Surgery Resident Receives DCRI Research Fellowship
Congratulations to Oliver Jawitz, MD, General Surgery Resident, who has received a research fellowship from the Duke Clinical Research Institute (DCRI). With funding from the DCRI's T32 research training grant, the fellowship will support Dr. Jawitz's postdoctoral training in cardiovascular research.

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the oldest and largest student-run organization focused on the needs and concerns of medical students of color. Each year, the national conference brings together its members for workshops related to professional development, community empowerment, and research.
General Surgery Resident Receives Snyderman Award
The Institutional Committee for Graduate Medical Education has selected Morgan Cox, MD, General Surgery Resident, as the recipient of the annual Ralph Snyderman, MD, GME Research Award. Established in 2004, the award recognizes excellence in graduate medical research.
The committee unanimously selected Dr. Cox from a strong pool of applicants due to her research project, “Documenting or Operating: Where is Time Spent in General Surgery Residency?” Research on time-management is particularly useful for residents today, as burnout rates continue to climb at alarming rates.
General Surgery Resident Wins 2017 Spurgeon Neel Award Competition
The Army Medical Department Museum Foundation has chosen Duke General Surgery Resident Justin Barr, MD, PhD, as the recipient of their Spurgeon Neel Award Competition. The award recognizes his paper, “America's Guerilla Hospitals in the Vietnam War: The CIDG Experience,” which the organization felt best exemplifies the history, legacy, and traditions of the Army Medical Department.
Dr. Barr’s paper will be published in the Army Medical Department’s AMEDD Journal, and he will be recognized in a presentation by the Board of Directors.
Duke Surgery Resident and Medical Student Receive American Transplant Congress Young Investigator Awards
The American Transplant Congress (ATC) has awarded Dr. Brian Ezekian, General Surgery Resident, and Qimeng Gao, third-year Duke-NUS medical student, ATC Young Investigator Awards for their excellent abstracts. This award recognizes young investigators for their outstanding work and helps to offset the expense to attend the ATC conference this June in Seattle, Washington.
General Surgery Resident to Present at ACS Surgical Simulation Summit
Congratulations to Dr. Morgan Cox, General Surgery Resident, on having her abstract accepted for a presentation at the 2018 Annual Surgical Simulation Summit of the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Dr. Cox will present her abstract titled “Utilizing Brain Stimulation to Enhance Laparoscopic Technical Skills Training: A Randomized Controlled Trial” during the Innovative Techniques session. The conference will be held March 16-17, 2018 in Chicago.
General Surgery Resident to Present at ASCRS 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting
Congratulations to Dr. Megan Turner, General Surgery Resident, on having her abstract accepted for a presentation at the 2018 Annual Scientific Meeting of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS). Dr. Turner will present her abstract titled “Adjuvant Chemotherapy Improves Survival Following Resection of Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer with Pathologic Complete Response” during the “Neoplasia I” session.
