Duke Surgery Ranks First Nationwide in NIH Funding

The Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research has released its 2018 rankings of NIH funding for basic and clinical science departments, revealing that Duke Surgery ranks highest nationwide with more than $30 million in funding committed to research.

Shelley Hwang, MD, MPH, Vice Chair of Research and Professor of Surgery, ranked first in the individual rankings for principal investigators, with more than $10 million in funding. Also in the top 10 was Professor of Surgery Georgia Tomaras, PhD, who ranked 7th.

Returning Duke Surgery to the number one spot in NIH funding was a major goal for Chair of the Department Allan D. Kirk, MD, PhD, FACS, since he joined Duke in 2014.
