Jon Scheyer Visits Duke Surgery Residency Program for Discussion on Character, Leadership

Duke Men's Basketball head coach Jon Scheyer visited the Duke General Surgery Residency Program on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 to discuss character and leadership.

Scheyer, who took over as head coach in April 2022 following the retirement of Mike Krzyzewski after 42 seasons, presented a talk titled, "What can basketball (and surgery) teach us about character?," as part of the program's didactics conference lecture series on ethics and professionalism.

"It was a privilege to have an esteemed guest in Coach Scheyer, and to hear his reflections on the human themes that both of our professions share," said Kevin Ig-Izevbekhai, MD, General Surgery Resident. "Coach Scheyer shared the wisdom of his coaching philosophy, one which promotes humility and virtue among highly accomplished individuals. The same traits are required to make good surgeons, especially at a place as special as Duke."

Dr. Ig-Izevbekhai co-coordinated the discussion along with Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME, Assistant Professor of Surgery, who also moderated the session and developed the ethics and professionalism series when he joined the Duke Department of Surgery in 2022.
