The Duke Department of Surgery is pleased to announce that Jacob A. Greenberg, MD, EdM, has been appointed Vice Chair of Education, effective September 1, 2024.
Dr. Greenberg has served as Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery since its formation in 2022 and was promoted to Associate Professor of Surgery in 2023.
“Since Dr. Greenberg joined the Duke Surgery faculty in 2022, he has left an indelible mark on elevating our clinical minimally invasive services and in educating trainees in minimally invasive techniques,” says Allan D. Kirk, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Surgery. “One of the reasons we were excited for Dr. Greenberg to join Duke was his staunch commitment to resident and trainee success, which was highly evident in his prior academic appointments, research interests, and mentorship successes. I believe that there is no one better to succeed Dr. John Migaly in this role of Vice Chair of Education and lead the Duke Surgery education mission into its next chapter.”
Dr. Greenberg completed both his undergraduate and medical school education at the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his general surgery residency training along with a research fellowship in surgery education at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. During this time, he earned a Master of Education (EdM) degree from Harvard University, and later completed a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at UMass Memorial Medical Center.
Following completion of his training, Dr. Greenberg joined the faculty at the University of Wisconsin (UW). He served as Program Director of the UW Advanced Gastrointestinal and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship and the UW General Surgery Residency programs.
Prior to joining Duke, Dr. Greenberg was the Leon Henry Charbonnier Endowed Chair of Surgical Education and the Assistant Dean of Operative Skills Assessment at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University (AU), where he held dual appointments in the Departments of Surgery and Neurosurgery.
“I am incredibly honored, humbled, and excited to have the opportunity to lead surgical education at Duke as the incoming Vice Chair of Education,” says Dr. Greenberg, who will maintain his role as Chief of the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery. “Of all the missions of an academic department of surgery, I can think of none more important than training the next generation of surgeon-scientists who will certainly go on to make outstanding contributions to the world of surgery and the surgical sciences.”
Dr. Greenberg has received several recognitions and accolades as a dedicated mentor, educator, and champion of surgical trainee development and well-being, including the Chief Resident Faculty Teaching Award (UW), The Golden Apple Faculty Teaching Award (AU), and most recently The Good Surgeon Award from the Duke Department of Surgery.
Dr. Greenberg’s research interests include surgical outcomes in abdominal wall reconstruction, competency-based assessment of surgical performances in trainees, curriculum development and assessment in surgical education, and surgical coaching for performance improvement. He has also served as principal investigator for several education-based research initiatives, focusing on video-based coaching and programmatic funding for trainees.
Dr. Greenberg will succeed John Migaly, MD, as Vice Chair of Education, who in July announced his upcoming departure from Duke to assume the role of Chief of Colorectal Surgery at Johns Hopkins University.
“We are fortunate to have a phenomenal education team filled with talented students, residents, fellows, faculty, program directors, and residency and fellowship coordinators,” adds Dr. Greenberg. “Over the coming years, I look forward to leading this group to implement innovative new educational and education research programs across all divisions utilizing video, artificial intelligence, personalized coaching and performance improvement, and competency-based methods of assessment.
“I want to thank Dr. Migaly for his incredible contributions over the last several years in this role, and I look forward to working with our talented teams and individuals to make Duke the strongest surgical academic department and training program in the country.”
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Greenberg on his appointment to this role.
