The Duke Department of Surgery has announced that Daniel Hashimoto, MD, MSTR, will join the Division of Minimally Invasive Surgery as an Associate Professor. He will also serve as Director of the department's Laboratory for Transformative Administration and as Director of Surgical Informatics for Duke University Health System. In addition to his strong reputation as an innovative and technically outstanding surgeon, Dr. Hashimoto is a national leader in research on data science and the use of artificial intelligence in surgery.
Dr. Hashimoto joins Duke Surgery from the University of Pennsylvania, where he has led the Penn Computer Assisted Surgery and Outcomes (PCASO) Laboratory. The lab's mission is to lead the translation of surgical data science and artificial intelligence to surgical care to improve patient outcomes, facilitate surgical education, and promote interdisciplinary collaboration between computer scientists and surgeons.
He earned a BA in Biology, with a specialization in Neuroscience, from Boston University, as well as an MD and an MS in Translational Research from the University of Pennsylvania. He trained as a Resident in General Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and as a Fellow in Comprehensive Flexible Endoscopy/Foregut Surgery at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center.
