The Duke Department of Surgery announced that Michael Lidsky, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery, has been appointed the next chief of the Section of Hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) Surgery within the Division of Surgical Oncology, effective July 10. He succeeds Dan "Trey" Blazer III, MD, who has served as Section Chief since 2020 and will continue to serve as interim Chief of Surgical Oncology, in addition to his new role as Vice Chair of Faculty Affairs.
Since joining the Duke faculty in 2018, Dr. Lidsky has stood out as a leader in clinical care, research, and mentorship. Among other accomplishments, he initiatied and leads Duke's hepatic arterial infusion program, which has grown into one of the highest-volume programs in the world, and co-founded the international Hepatic Artery Infusion Consortium Research Network, a collaborative clinical and research infrastructure. His scholarly work includes more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and multiple competitive research awards, including an NIH KL2 Career Development Award.
As a mentor, Dr. Lidsky has trained numerous surgical fellows, residents, research fellows, and medical students, many of whom have gone on to academic faculty positions at leading institutions across the country.
"Dr. Lidsky has helped strengthen Duke's national reputation in surgical oncology while advancing the care of patients with complex gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary malignancies, and I'm confident that his skills and experience have prepared him well to lead HPB surgery at Duke," said Peter J. Allen, MD, David C. Sabiston Jr. Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery.
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Lidsky.
