The Duke Department of Surgery has announced that Jennifer Hunara, MHA, MBA will join the department as Chief Administrative Officer and Vice Chair for Administration on June 8. In this role, she will provide comprehensive administrative leadership, coordination, and financial oversight for the department, with responsibility for business operations including finance and budgeting, personnel administration, space and facilities planning, grant administration, and policy interpretation.
Hunara brings extensive operational and financial leadership experience in academic medicine and surgical care to her new role. Most recently, she has served since 2017 as Senior Director for the Department of Surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK), where she led successful budget, clinical management, and physician compensation initiatives while growing operating room volume and clinic visits. Before MSK, Hunara served as the inaugural Administrator at Surgery Center of Allentown; Executive Director, Surgical Services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in Hamilton, NJ; and Perioperative Services Business Manager at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network.
Hunara succeeds Katherine Stanley, who served as CAO of Duke Surgery for 11 years and worked at Duke for 27 years.
Hunara said, “I’m thrilled to work with Duke Surgery’s phenomenal faculty and administrative leadership team, and I look forward to partnering with them to maximize their impact on patients, students, and the community.”
Duke Surgery Chair Peter Allen, MD said, “Jenn’s talent for administrative leadership will be a tremendous asset as Duke Surgery continues to advance our three-part mission of clinical care, education, and research. I’m confident that she will enable the department to continue its tradition of operating at the highest level among academic surgery departments.”
