Duke Surgery Resident and Medical Student Inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society

Thoracic surgery resident Muath Bishawi, MD, MPH, and third-year medical student Banafsheh Sharif-Askary have been elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Medical Honor Society in recognition of their commitment to medicine. Banafsheh Sharif-Askary is a research student in the Division of Plastic Surgery.

The AOA society, founded in 1902, recognizes scholastic achievement, leadership capabilities, ethical standards, fairness in dealing with colleagues, professionalism, achievement and potential for achievement in medicine, and a record of service to the school and community at large. While the majority of new members are medical students, the chapter also elects a small group of residents and fellows each spring. This year only 2 were chosen for Duke’s chapter, including Dr. Bishawi.

Please join the department in congratulating both recipients!
