Duke Surgery Hosts 10th Annual Research Day

The Duke Department of Surgery held its 10th Annual Research Day on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. Established in 2016 under then-Chair of Surgery Allan D. Kirk, MD, PhD, the event is held annually to advance the department’s mission of improving patient care through research and training the next generation of surgeon-scientists. The event recognizes the accomplishments of residents, fellows, and students engaged in clinical, basic, or translational research through the department.

This year, 102 abstracts were submitted by learners in the department and Duke NUS, with 97 final posters, 8 selected for podium presentations, and 10 selected as posters of distinction.

Justin B. Dimick, MD, MPH, Frederick A. Coller Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical School, served as a guest judge and gave the Hunter McGuire Sweaney Lectureship during Surgery Grand Rounds. Dr. Dimick gave a presentation titled, “The Secret to Fostering Successful Surgeon Scientists: Engineering Unfair Advantage.”

Congratulations to this year’s winners!
