2nd Annual Surgeons as Educational Scholars Symposium

By Scott Behm, Duke Surgery

On February 23, 2020, the General Surgery Residency Program held its 2nd annual Surgeons as Educational Scholars Symposium. The event serves as a formal training course to prepare residents for their role as educators in surgery.

Research fellows Sarah Commander, MD, and Brian Shaw, MD, assisted with planning the event.

“Residents participated in lively discussions with education leaders at Duke to talk about the specific challenges of surgical teaching,” says Dr. Shaw. “They had thorough discussions on how to best integrate education in the OR, shared strategies as to how to integrate medical students into surgical services, how to incorporate authentic professional activities into the students’ rotations, and brainstormed ways to help students more broadly explore surgical subspecialties."
