The Section of Colorectal Surgery treats all conditions related to the colon and rectum that require surgical intervention, both benign and malignant.
We are a high-volume center for colorectal surgeries, which results in expertise that few centers can match. As the largest colorectal group in North Carolina, we receive referrals from throughout the Southeast and the world.
Working closely with colleagues in plastic surgery, urology, and gynecology oncology, our surgeons provide personalized treatment. We use minimally invasive surgical approaches, including laparoscopic, robotic, endoscopic, and transanal procedures, whenever possible.
We have an emphasis on colorectal cancer surgeries. We collaborate with medical oncology and radiation oncology to provide comprehensive care. As part of our focus on the patient, we schedule appointments for new patients with all groups on the same day to minimize travel for patients and their families. We review each case in a multidisciplinary weekly tumor board and decide on a treatment plan that is implemented within hours.
Our latest colorectal National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) report (January 2018) demonstrates 9/14 “exemplary” metrics.
Our innovative enhanced recovery program, developed by Dr. Julie Thacker, focuses on reducing the length of stay as well as costs. From making sure the correct antibiotics are used to minimizing incisions to early feeding and ambulation, the program improves patient experience and outcomes. It has served as a model for other divisions with Duke Surgery as well as other institutions throughout the U.S.
