Clinical and Research Interests
Clinically I am most interested in complex reconstructions, aesthetic surgery, and hand surgery - in summary, haven't really narrowed it down too far. My research interests are primarily related to global health and quality improvement.
What were you looking for in a residency program?
When applying for residency, I was looking for a program that combined multiple characteristics I found important. Specifically, a place where I knew I would receive a thorough exposure to some of the most difficult and complex surgical problems, a learning environment of attendings and co-residents that would help me build my skills as a doctor and a surgeon, and a group of colleagues that I would enjoy spending the oftentimes long hours of residency with. Beyond work, personal attributes were also really important - my fiancé and I were couples matching, and both of us were looking for a city where we would have easy access to nature, a diverse restaurant/bar/social scene, and a reasonable cost of living. Happy to say we found all of those attributes at Duke!
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Residency is hard, but the bonds you'll make and the growth you'll experience are remarkable. Find your support structure, never worry about a problem alone, realize the amazing impact you are having on a patient's journey, celebrate your wins, learn from your losses, and don't get jaded by the inefficiencies and gaps within the healthcare system.
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
Maintaining your life outside of medicine is important to prioritize as a resident! I like lazy weekend mornings with my fiancé (who is an anesthesia resident here at Duke), playing tennis (or pickleball), skiing, photography (www.pharavuphotography.com), trying to perfect recipes and cocktails, frequent Xbox games with my friends, and reading a book on the porch every once in a while.
