What were you looking for in a residency program?

I was looking for a strong clinical program with a focus on education and exposure to the breadth of plastic surgery. I particularly was interested in programs with a high volume of microsurgical cases and early exposure for residents.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

Our program at Duke is as well rounded as you can get. The program is clinically rigorous with exposure to the full breadth of plastic surgery and there is a focus on technical surgical excellence. There is a rich history with a particular emphasis on reconstructive microsurgery. This continues today with a high volume, complex microsurgical practice without fellows. This means that residents are involved in these cases early and often. Coupled with the clinical experience is one of the highest NIH-funded Departments of Surgery in the nation with diverse research interests amongst the residents and faculty members. This creates an environment where residents can truly pursue anything they are interested in from clinical to research to extracurricular. The opportunities are truly endless at Duke.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Work extremely hard, be the most prepared person in the room, and do the right thing for your patients. Not because you are seeking praise or acknowledgement, but because it is the right thing to do.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

I have a young, growing family and there are numerous family-friendly activities in the Durham area. From outdoor activities on the Tobacco Trail to family-friendly breweries (there are many), to weekend trips to the beach or mountains, there is never a shortage of things to do. Durham is a great place to live and raise a family.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

Outside of work I love to spend time with my family and explore the Durham area. I am an avid runner and cyclist and I like to compete in local races. I also enjoy reading in my spare time.
