Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME, Named Greenwall Faculty Scholar, Receives KNN Reimagination Grant

Ryan Antiel, MD, MSME, Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric General Surgery, has been named a recipient of the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics career development award for his project, “The Ethics of the Artificial Womb: Clinical Innovations at the Margins of Viability.”

The Greenwall Faculty Scholars Program in Bioethics, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2022, supports early-career faculty members to carry out innovative bioethics research. Dr. Antiel is one of three individuals named to the Greenwall Faculty Scholars Class of 2027.

“I am humbled to receive this prestigious award and look forward to representing the Duke Department of Surgery and School of Medicine in such an important way,” says Dr. Antiel.

Dr. Antiel’s project looks to assess the ethics of neonatal innovation—referred to as “artificial womb” technology—that offers hope for reducing mortality and disability among extremely premature infants, and the risk tolerance of parents for such innovation.

In addition to the Greenwall Faculty Scholars award, Dr. Antiel has also been awarded the Kern National Network for Flourishing in Medicine (KNN) Reimagination Grant for 'The Project on the Good Surgeon,' an initiative developed by Dr. Antiel in 2023 that focuses on fostering residents' well-being, community, and sense of self while training. He previously received the KNN Innovation Grant for the same project in 2023.

The Reimagination Grant additionally includes funds for a KNN Student Chapter at Duke for each project year.

The KNN Reimagination Grants program funds projects that impact clinical learning and/or practice environments, such as: flourishing in the GME, measuring flourishing in medicine, learner engagement, wellness and leadership, faculty development, and deep dives into caring and character.

Dr. Antiel joined the Duke Department of Surgery in 2022. He is also a core faculty member in the Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities, and History of Medicine. His research background focuses on parental decision-making when faced with uncertainty and end-of-life issues for critically ill fetuses and neonates. Since joining Duke, Dr. Antiel’s research interests have expanded into surgical and medical ethics, and how surgical training shapes residents’ character.
