The American College of Surgeons National Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP) has recognized Duke University Hospital (DUH) and Duke Raleigh Hospital (DRaH) for achieving meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care in 2025. This is the tenth consecutive year in which DUH has achieved meritorious outcomes, and the second recognition for DRaH.
ACS NSQIP-participating hospitals are required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures, and these outcomes are then analyzed by ACS and reported back to hospitals. The results inform patient safety initiatives within the hospital and impact the quality of surgical care.
Recognized hospitals are deemed “Meritorious” for their composite quality scores in eight surgical outcomes areas. 77 out of an eligible 594 hospitals participating in the ACS NSQIP adult program achieved the distinction based on an outstanding quality score on one or both grouping categories (All Cases and High Risk). 40 hospitals, including DUH, were recognized on both lists, representing approximately 10% of the 594 eligible hospitals. DRaH was one of 60 hospitals to appear on the High Risk list.
“I could not be prouder of our teams at Duke University Hospital and Duke Raleigh Hospital for once again being recognized as achieving meritorious surgical outcomes,” said Keri Seymour, DO, Associate Professor of Surgery and Chief Quality Officer for the Department of Surgery.
“A decade of consecutive recognition for DUH is a testament to our teams’ dedication to providing high-quality care for every patient, at every level of acuity," said Hadiza Kazaure, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and NSQIP lead for DUH.
“Duke Raleigh Hospital meeting the meritorious designation for a second time also speaks to Duke’s dedication to advancing surgical care across the Triangle,” said Karen Sherman, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery and NSQIP lead at DRaH. “We are proud to provide a high standard of care for our patients in and around Raleigh and commend our surgical teams at Duke Raleigh for their outstanding work.”
