The Duke Department of Surgery is proud to announce that Donald Glower, MD, Professor Emeritus of Surgery and Cynthia Shortell, MD, Professor Emeritus of Surgery, have been named as Master Surgeons. The recognition is the department's highest honor for a former or current member of the faculty, bestowed in recognition of individuals who exemplify the ideals of Duke Surgery.
Dr. Glower is recognized for his innovation and productivity as an adult cardiac surgeon with minimally invasive techniques, his vigorous research program, and his legacy as a leader and mentor.
Dr. Shortell's distinction is in recognition of her national and international reputation for advancing the science and technical execution of vascular surgery, her research that served as a foundation for her clinical insights, and her leadership in establishing and growing Duke's Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery.
“Don and Cinny represent the best of Duke Surgery—clinical expertise, innovation, and a commitment to educating those who come after us,” Duke Surgery Chair Peter Allen, MD said, adding, "I couldn’t be more delighted to see them named as this year’s Master Surgeons.”
