Dr. Peter Smith, Professor and Chief, Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, has been reappointed as Chair of the American Medical Association’s Specialty Society Relative Value Scale (RVS) Update Committee (RUC). This multispecialty committee consists of an expert panel of physicians who make recommendations to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on how to value a physician's work, including the resources required to provide a medical service. The CMS considers these recommendations in developing relative value units (RVUs), which are used to determine healthcare costs and insurance reimbursements.
Dr. Smith will serve a two-year term as Chair from March 2019 to February 2021.
