Centennial Summit on Data Science in Surgery Celebrates Future of Surgical Innovation

The Duke Department of Surgery hosted the Centennial Summit on Data Science in Surgery on Thursday, April 18, as a part of the celebration of Duke's centennial—the 100th anniversary of Trinity College becoming Duke University. Centennial celebrations recognize Duke’s extraordinary past, communicate the impact of the present and look toward the potential of Duke’s future.

Led by vice chair of research and professor of surgery Shelley Hwang, MD, and vice chair of innovation Ozanan Meireles, MD, the Summit featured presentations and discussions led by experts in the fields of data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and their applications in surgical care. Dr. Meireles also provided the keynote address: "Surgical AI and Cultural Transformation."

Presenters included Duke Surgery faculty, along with faculty and research partners from the Duke Departments of Radiology, Anesthesiology, and Biostatics & Bioinformatics; Duke NUS; Duke AI Health; the Duke Clinical and Translational Science Institute; and the SAIL laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Attendees included Duke surgical faculty, residents, researchers, computer scientists, pathologists, anesthesiologists, medical students, and more.

"I am immensely proud of the success of the summit, and am grateful to have had the opportunity to celebrate the Duke Centennial in this unique way," says Dr. Hwang. "Data science is a growing focus of the future of healthcare, and it is important that Duke Surgery is at the center of–and leading–the conversations surrounding its applications, and implications."

The summit covered myriad topics at the heart of these conversations, from examining technical design and logistics of integration, to addressing ethical considerations and use of analytics to improve patient outcomes.

Closing remarks were provided by Allan D. Kirk, MD, PhD, David C. Sabiston, Jr. Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Duke Department of Surgery. Dr. Kirk spoke to the vision for ushering in a new era of data science at Duke Surgery, led by innovation, transformation, and collaboration.
