The Duke Department of Surgery added 12 faculty members to its “100 Years of Surgical Research” installation in July 2025.
About the Installation
Located in the department's administrative offices in Duke University Hospital, the installation, which is also known familiarly as the "Grant Wall," was created in 2021 to visually and dynamically recognize Duke Surgery’s federally funded researchers over a 100-year period, beginning with Dr. Joseph Beard, who in 1938 received the first federal grant for his research in avian leukemia viruses. The display will continue to expand until it reaches its centennial in 2038.
The display features an engraved tile for each investigator who has earned federal funding; for each subsequent federal award, another tile is added to the investigator’s stack, up to 10 awards.
The installation is updated every two years, adding tiles for the newest additions to the ever-growing list of federally funded researchers within the department.
