What are your clinical and research interests?
My research interests include using clinical and large-scale datasets to better understand surgical outcomes, optimize reconstructive techniques, and improve the value and quality of care. Specific areas of focus include breast reconstruction, general reconstruction, surgical outcomes, and health disparities.
What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a program that provides strong clinical training and broad exposure to the full spectrum of plastic surgery, while also giving me the opportunity to develop my own clinical and research interests. I wanted to find a program where the residents had a strong sense of camaraderie and genuinely supported one another. I was also looking to live somewhere that offered an ease of living and a high quality of life outside of the hospital.
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
The breadth of training at Duke is incredible. We have exposure to such a wide range of plastic surgery, from complex microsurgical reconstruction to craniofacial surgery, hand surgery, trauma, and aesthetic surgery. Another major strength is the people. We have faculty with a tremendous depth of experience who are invested in teaching and mentorship, and the residents have a close-knit, supportive culture. I think Duke does a particularly good job of creating an environment where you are challenged to become a better surgeon while still feeling supported throughout the process.
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Approach every rotation as a learning opportunity, and take the time to build relationships with the people you work with. Remember that these experiences are new for everyone, and don't be afraid to ask questions or lean on your co-residents, seniors, and mentors. Most importantly, take care of yourself—intern year is challenging, and it's important to make time to recharge.
What do you like best about living in durham and the Triangle?
Durham is such an easy place to live. After living here for five years, I've really come to appreciate how much the Triangle has to offer. There are so many incredible restaurants and activities, and everything is conveniently within a 15-20 minute drive. If you're looking for more of a city experience, Raleigh is close by, while Durham offers a great balance of things to do with a more relaxed pace of life. I also really enjoy how easy it is to get outdoors and explore the area when I have time away from the hospital.
What do you like to do outside of Duke?
Tennis/pickleball, explore local restaurants and bars, travel, and spend time with friends and family.
