What were you looking for in a residency program?

There were a number of important factors I considered when applying for residency. Strong and varied clinical programs were important to me as I was unsure what I wanted to specialize in and wanted a broad exposure. An educational culture that was resident-focused was important to me, which I assessed through the vision of the chair and program director. A genuine camaraderie between the faculty and between the residents. A strong track record of fellowship matches from program alumni. And a location that I could envision living in and growing in for the next 6 years of my life.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

An unparalleled clinical experience with complex head reconstruction, a large and integrated hand division, an excellent cleft team, extensive facial trauma experience, a growing aesthetics experience, among other things. Extremely dedicated mentors. Centralized call requirements that allow for a streamlined call experience. Genuine residency friendships.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Ownership, integrity, work-ethic, humility, and a sense of humor are the fundamentals of a successful resident in my opinion.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

The Triangle really has everything you can ask for. There's a vibrant restaurant scene. DPAC frequently has broadway shows and famous stand-up comedians on-tour. Plenty of outdoor activities including hiking trails, boating, and mountain biking. An international airport. And you can live in a house with a yard.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

Hang out with my fiancé and dog, exercise/basketball, TV, hike
