What were you looking for in a residency program?
I was looking for a residency program with excellent clinical training, opportunities for research and innovation, and a great culture among the residents and the attendings. I could not be more happy with my choice to train at Duke!
What are the strengths of the Duke program?
Duke has so much to offer! The Plastic Surgery program is one of the first in the country and has a rich history and reputation for training excellent surgeons. Everyone is committed to our training during residency, including our fellow residents, our attendings, and our alumni. Duke has a great diversity of clinical training, with robust experience in microsurgery, general reconstruction, hand and upper extremity, and more. Our division continues to hire new attendings, which further diversifies our experience and prepares us for fellowship and ultimately our careers in plastic surgery.
What advice do you have for incoming interns?
Take the opportunity to learn as much as you can from each rotation! Non-service rotations in particular provide an opportunity to better understand patient care and how different specialties work together. Because plastic surgery often works with so many surgical specialties including general surgery, orthopedic surgery, and neurosurgery, it is especially important to build a strong foundation early in residency.
What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?
Durham is an awesome city for residency! We have great restaurants, breweries, and outdoor activities. Durham is quite affordable and you can get everywhere via car in less than 20 minutes with minimal traffic. The triangle area is growing rapidly too, and there are so many new jobs in the area and the housing market is booming. Chapel Hill and Raleigh are super close and are just a short drive away, as is the RDU airport which is easy to get in and out. We are only a few hours away from the beach and the mountains, which make for great weekend trips as well.
What do you like to do outside of medicine?
Travel, workout classes, cooking
