Suhail K. Mithani, MD, Appointed Chief of Ambulatory Operations

The Duke Department of Surgery is pleased to announce the appointment of Suhail K. Mithani, MD, as the department’s new Chief of Ambulatory Operations, effective July 1, 2023.

“I am excited to have Dr. Mithani step into this important new role to oversee ambulatory operations. He will play a critical role in developing collaborative partnerships with clinical leadership within the Duke University Health System (DUHS) and the Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP),” says Allan D. Kirk, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Surgery.

The Chief of Ambulatory Operations (CAOps) is the Department of Surgery’s senior-most leader with regards to clinical care delivery in the clinic and ambulatory setting. The CAOps is charged with overseeing the conduct of outpatient care performed by departmental faculty and staff across all Duke University Health System (DUHS) clinical platforms.

“It is an honor to accept this position as we look to continually improve outpatient surgical care for everyone who comes through our doors,” says Dr. Mithani. “We have a strong, dedicated team who carries out this work every day. I look forward to providing them the support they need to do that work effectively, efficiently, and hopefully more easily.”

Dr. Mithani is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Plastic, Maxillofacial, and Oral Surgery. He has served as Vice Chair for Clinical Operations of the Division since 2018.

The CAOps will work closely with the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations (VCCO) and the Chair of Surgery to develop collaborative partnerships with clinical leadership within DUHS and the Duke Health Integrated Practice (DHIP) to lead the Department in the variety of clinical operational initiatives that are necessary for its success.

Dr. Mithani is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He received his Medical Degree from Vanderbilt University where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his Plastic Surgery residency at Johns Hopkins and his Hand Fellowship at Duke.  Dr. Mithani has served on the faculty at Duke since 2012.
