Kevin Southerland, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, contributed to a high impact scientific statement published in Circulation, on the complex pathogenesis and current management of diabetic foot ulcers in cardiovascular patients. The statement guides therapeutic and preventive strategies and future research directions, and will be used to inform public policy makers on health disparities and other barriers to improving and advancing care for this expanding patient population.

The work is presented on behalf of the American Heart Association Council on Peripheral Vascular Disease; Council on Cardiovascular and Stroke Nursing; Council on Clinical Cardiology; and Council on Lifestyle and Cardiometabolic Health.

"This work is so important, and I’m proud that Duke will be helping to lead the path forward for these at-risk patients in part through his impactful clinical and scientific contributions." - Dawn Coleman, MD, Chief of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery
