Clinical and Research Interests

I enjoy all aspects of urology, which is what originally drew me to the field. However, my training in the Army has instilled more interest in genitourinary reconstruction particularly as it applies to trauma. From a research perspective, I have always been very interested in immunology and particularly how the immune system can be modulated to augment surgical outcomes.

What were you looking for in a residency program?

I was looking for a residency program that offered exposure to a diverse patient population with a robust case load and easy access to research.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

Most programs that I interviewed at offered great faculty and training facilities; however, what set Duke apart was the quality of the residents. During my interview, every resident came across as professional, competent, and passionate about urology. Not only that, but they seemed to enjoy each other and what they were doing. To this day, I continue to see these traits in all of my co-residents and I could not ask for a better cohort to call my team.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Be humble and work hard.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

Durham is the perfect small city. I have lived in New York, Washington DC, and San Francisco as well as cities outside of the United States, and Durham is my favorite so far. The Research Triangle is big enough to offer everything you may want from international cuisine to indoor rock climbing, but it is not so big that it is overwhelming. Furthermore, you have access to lakes, rivers, beaches and mountains all within a three-hour radius. More locally, there are great rivers and lakes for fishing, swimming and hiking within minutes from the hospital.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

I enjoy skiing, hiking, fishing, and running with my dog.
