For Rachel A. Greenup, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor, Division of Advanced Oncologic and Gastrointestinal Surgery, understanding how the cost of treatment impacts women with breast cancer is paramount to her research. Dr. Greenup has been selected to present her latest research abstract, “The Financial Burden of Breast Cancer Treatment,” at the annual Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH) meeting in October.
Dr. Greenup is one of Duke’s NIH-K12-funded scholars through the Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH) program, which provides mentored career development and support. Her abstract was 1 of 3 selected from a pool of the 75 active BIRCWH scholars in the country, due to its high relevance for health policy and patient impact. The study interviewed over 500 women to determine if cost was a determining factor in breast cancer treatment decisions.
