How to Apply

Prerequisites

Applicants must have:

  • Graduated from a PA training program approved by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA)
  • Passed or be eligible to take the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification examination

Class of 2020-2021 Application Timeline

  • January 6 – Program applications are accepted
  • March 5 – Application deadline
  • March/April – Interviews will be conducted
  • September 1 – Program start date

Application Requirements

A complete application includes the following (do not staple together):

  • Application (Word document)
  • Official transcripts from any college(s) and the PA school you attended
  • Copies of BLS and ACLS certification cards
  • A one-page typewritten narrative stating why you are interested in the Duke University PA Surgical Residency Program
  • Three Letters of Recommendation (including one from your PA Program)
  • Official NCCPA exam scores (if certified); certification before August 31 is mandatory
  • A signed copy of the authorization agreement
  • The application fee of $25, made payable to Duke University

All application documents should be scanned and emailed to DukeSurgeryPAResidency@duke.edu no later than March 5, 2021.

Interview

Selected applicants will be invited for a virtual interview based on evidence of academic achievement, interpersonal skills, motivation, personal maturity, enthusiasm, and a strong desire for further development of their surgical skills and knowledge.

Applicants will be notified regarding interviews no later than March 15, 2021. Interviews will be conducted virtually on April 2, 2021.

Notification

All candidates will be notified in writing of the admission committee's decision.

Candidates who have been interviewed are notified of the admission committee's decision as early as 10 days following interview and no later than June 1.

Candidates may confirm their place in the class by submission of the PA Residency Employment Agreement.

A ranked alternate list will be maintained for those candidates who have been interviewed for a position in the class. Should an accepted candidate withdraw from the program prior to the program start date, the position will be offered to the highest ranked candidate on the alternate list.
