
Krish Dewan, MD, Post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, was awarded the C. Walton Lillehei Award for Basic Science at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery annual meeting in Seattle, WA, on May 5, 2025.
The award was for Dr. Dewan's research investigation on a novel AAV gene therapy for preventing immune rejection after cardiac transplantation under the mentorship of Carmelo Milano, MD, Joseph W. and Dorothy W. Beard Distinguished Professor of Experimental Surgery, Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and Dawn Bowles, PhD, Assistant Professor in Surgery, Division of Surgical Sciences.
This study was also previously awarded the AATS Foundation Cardiac Surgical Resident Research Award in 2023.
The Lillehei Award is named after C. Walton Lillehei, MD, PhD, a pioneer in open heart surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass. This award is among the most prestigious research awards for cardiothoracic surgery trainees.
