Researchers in the Duke Divisions of Abdominal Transplant Surgery and Surgical Sciences were recently awarded a NIH U01 grant for a study titled, 'Genetic engineering of kidney allografts by ex vivo perfusion delivery of adeno-associated viral vectors.'
"The aim is to deliver gene therapies to kidney allografts using ex vivo organ perfusion in order to reduce immunogenicity," says Andrew Barbas, MD, Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Abdominal Transplant Surgery.
Dr. Barbas serves as co-principal investigator on the study along with Aravind Asokan, PhD, Professor in Surgery, and Allan D. Kirk, MD, PhD, Chair of the Department of Surgery.
