Rachel Adams Greenup, MD
Assistant Professor of Surgery
What is your specific area of interest in health services?
Breast Cancer Care Delivery and Cancer Economics
What is an example of your best work in health services research?
Costs associated with the treatment of breast cancer are the highest of all cancer types, with a significant portion of costs related to locoregional treatment. We sought to determine whether the national treatment costs of radiation following lumpectomy could be reduced if evidence-based and guideline-adherent radiation regiments were applied. Our study found that the majority of women in the United States are receiving more radiation treatment than is medically warranted, and that overtreatment of these women results in significant costs to the system, translating into $164 million dollars of extra expenses per year.
In your opinion, what is an important health services research question that needs to be answered in the field of breast cancer?
Identifying "just right" high value treatment for women with breast cancer.
