Georgia Tomaras, PhD, was selected to serve as the Chair of the AIDS Vaccine Research Subcommittee (AVRS) (2016-2019) for the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The AVRS assists the NIH in developing a comprehensive research program aimed at expediting the discovery and development of an HIV/AIDS vaccine.
The AVRS makes recommendations to the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the Division of AIDS concerning key scientific questions in vaccine development, including new vaccine designs and efforts to understand the mechanisms of protection in animal models, and potential new targets for vaccines.
