We are excited to announce that STAR 2020 will take place from March 30 – April 10, 2020. Interested fourth year medical students who are planning to match into surgery or surgical specialties should email Chris Reed after October 21 but prior to spring registration opening in order to obtain a permission number. The class will be limited to 20 students in order to preserve faculty-to-student ratios. If more than 20 students register, a lottery system will be used to cap enrollment.
New Sessions for 2020
While the 2020 curriculum will largely reflect past experiences, we try to modify the course every year based on feedback from students.
Specialty Breakout Sessions
While the course is funded and run by general surgery, we welcome the participation of students pursing other surgical specialties. We try to accommodate specialty-specific education through breakout sessions, such as cystoscopy for future urologists and laryngoscopy for future OHNS specialists. As STAR grows and develops, we plan to add more breakout sessions, catered to the assortment of subspecialties in each year’s class.
At many programs, interns respond to trauma calls. This session will incorporate both relevant technical skills, such as cricothyroidotomies using fresh tissue, as well as practice in the assessment, procedural, and team-leader roles in common scenarios at our simulation center. Students will learn and apply appropriate algorithms to manage the acutely injured patient.
