Urinary Stone Disease Research Network: Scientific Data Research Center

The purpose of this grant is to establish and support the Scientific Data Research Center for the new NIDDK Urinary Stone Disease Research Network.  The Scientific Data Research Center is responsible for protocol development, oversight of clinical sites, data management and analysis, and coordinating all network operations. The scientific aims of the network are to identify methods to increase adherence to fluid intake for secondary prevention of stones, test interventions to mitigate patient symptoms from ureteral stents, and establish a biorepository and data warehouse for future research.

The purpose of this grant is to use a stakeholder engagement approach to develop and pilot test a decision aid to assist in shared decision-making for patients presenting to the emergency department with a suspected kidney stone.  My role in the project is to provide urologic clinical perspective, health services research expertise, and research mentorship for the investigator team led by Dr. Schoenfeld.

Disparities in the Use of Oral Anticancer Agents in Kidney Cancer                                             

The purpose of this grant is to (1) assess and describe the current state of oral anticancer medication utilization, delivery, and adherence; (2) identify patient, provider, and systemic barriers to adherence and disparities in outcomes; and, (3) develop strategies to address these barriers to improve access to these agents in order to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.  My role in the project is to provide clinical urological expertise as well as expertise in analysis of complex claims-based data.

An Opioid Prescribing Nudge: Leveraging behavioral economics to reduce opioid harm within health systems

The purpose of this grant is to develop and test an intervention to reduce opioid prescribing for acute pain management among clinicians in the Duke Health System.  The proposed project will leverage insights from behavioral economics to design informational and social incentives to reduce variation in prescribing practices and reduce opioid harm.
