Residents in the Surgeons as Educators Course

Course Description

The Duke Department of Surgery offers a new formal training course for General Surgery Residents to prepare them for their role as educators in surgery. The first of its kind in the United States, this two-day course focuses on education basics, surgical teaching, and team dynamics to prepare surgical residents to become effective teachers in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment. Collaborating with successful initiatives, such as Duke Ahead and the Feagin Leadership Program, faculty instructors with expertise in medical education lead sessions throughout the course.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Foster a constructive learning environment with didactic and practical teaching strategies
  • Improve patient care by preparing medical students to assume clinical responsibilities
  • Enhance team management and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Reduce burnout among residents
  • Improve satisfaction among medical students in the surgery clerkship​
