What were you looking for in a residency program?

I was looking for a program with a supportive environment with strong mentorship, and a balance between great multi-modal surgical training, patient-centered care, and clinical exposure.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

Foremost is the "team and family" mentality embodied by the residents themselves and our commitment to one another to help each other learn. We have an incredible faculty made up of experts in the field who help shape guidelines and clinical practice for urologists worldwide. Strong surgical training in various modalities including a great balance of open and lap/MIS/endo experience. Great facilities and a hospital/health system invested in, and appreciative of, residents as a whole.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Be humble, be honest, and be a team player. Strive every day to learn something new and tie it to the clinical experiences you have. Start setting the tone and culture you want to carry forward to and through your chief year. Remember that you have a whole family of co-residents and faculty here to support you. And, while intern year can be challenging anywhere in any specialty, it is also a great year where you will learn and develop - remember to have fun!

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

How easy it is - financially, commuting-wise, weather-wise, and how diverse it is. Durham in particular is an incredible city which has come into its own over the years I've lived here with a vibrant restaurant and music scene. It's great having three different cities (Durham, Chapel Hill, and Raleigh) all within 30 minutes of each other, each with their own feel, things to do, and nightlife.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

  • Hiking, running, traveling
