Clinical and Research Interests

At this stage of my career I am clinically interested in Abdominal Transplant, specifically kidney and pancreas transplant. I pursued my PhD in Xenotransplantation with Dr. A. Joseph Tector and am interested in pursuing a research career in immunology, transplant tolerance, transplant graft rejection, and/or xenotransplantation.

What were you looking for in a residency program?

The things I was looking for in a residency program were strong general surgery programs with an exposure to abdominal transplant and a record of training surgeon-scientists. After that I was really trying to assess the fit of myself and family in the area.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

I had the privilege of interviewing at great programs around the country - what really set Duke apart to me was the dedication and history of training good surgeon-scientists, particularly those with a focus on immunology.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Prioritize your extracurricular activities and identify your support network - it is difficult in life to do everything well and having a support network to lean on is key.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

The area was a great fit for my family! I am married with two young kids and we were able to afford a house in a great neighborhood with a pool, park, playground, etc literally across the street.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

My sons are 4 and 2 so they consume a lot of my wife and I's free time - we enjoy being outdoors, fishing, hikes, and anything that can get us outside!
