What were you looking for in a residency program?

I was looking for three things when evaluating residency programs: strong clinical training, a collegial group of co-residents, and the ability to pursue any and all academic interests.

What are the strengths of the Duke program?

Duke provides excellent clinical training and you will graduate a strong clinician and surgeon. The opportunities to rotate at multiple hospitals in different settings provides a wide breadth of experience. But above all, we have outstanding residents who all look out for and support each other.

What advice do you have for incoming interns?

Enjoy the last part of your 4th year of medical school. Once you start, be punctual, hard working, and willing to take feedback and improve. Self-reflection is key to your growth as a physician; no one is perfect and you will need to identify for yourself areas for improvement. And don't forget that you are not alone in this; reach out to your co-interns, co-residents, and whatever other support structures you have.

What do you like best about living in Durham and the Triangle?

The Triangle is a rapidly growing region full of great restaurants, craft breweries, and a diverse group of people. The beaches and mountains are only a few hours drive away and make for excellent opportunities to get away for the weekend and enjoy yourself outside of the hospital.

What do you like to do outside of Duke?

Working out, hiking, visiting Asheville, and eating my way through NC.
