Designed for students planning to become career urologists, the sub-internship exposes students to the complete realm of urology, including diagnosis, non-operative management, surgical treatment, and postoperative care of adult and pediatric patients.

Students selecting this elective will be involved in endoscopic, laparoscopic, oncologic, and reconstructive adult and pediatric surgery. Students will work with faculty in clinics, operating rooms, and rounds, and will work with residents on the wards as they participate in pre-, intra- and post-operative patient care.

During this rotation, students will act as an intern and participate fully with the Duke Urology team, including intern-resident responsibility.

Sub-interns are required to participate in journal club and will present one journal club article. In addition, sub-interns are required to give a 15-minute (maximum) talk on a chosen subject at the urology grand rounds conference. Attendance and participation in all conferences is required.

Though this course it is not required for you to match as a resident at Duke, the sub-internship may help you decide if you would like to train at Duke and allows our team to get to know you better.

Visiting students who wish to participate in the sub-internship elective at Duke should submit their application through the AAMC VLSO and register for elective Urology 401C.
