Training Grants
The National Institutes of Health is currently funding the following Duke Academic Surgical Research Fellow Training Programs.
Grant Title: Training in Biomolecular and Tissue Engineering
Funding Institute: National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)
Funding Institute: National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB)
This grant is designed to develop a formal interdisciplinary post-doctoral training program focused on the bioengineering of molecules, cells, and tissues for applications in biotechnology. Provisions for stipend and training for 6 post-doctoral fellows will be provided annually. Applications for this NIH research fellowship should be made to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Farshid Guilak, Professor in Surgery (guila001@mc.duke.edu).
Grant Title: Training in the Biology of Injury and Inflammation
Funding Institute: National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
Funding Institute: National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS)
The purpose of this grant is to provide postdoctoral research training in the cellular and molecular biology of clinical states typified by trauma, sepsis, ischemia/reperfusion, acute and chronic inflammation, and/or critical illness. The long-term goal of the program is to produce academic surgeons with investigative expertise in these areas. The advances in genetics, cell biology, immunology and biochemistry provide important opportunities to educate and train future generations of surgical scientists and leaders. It is our goal to capitalize upon these scientific opportunities and the resources available through Duke University by training future leaders in the biology of injury and inflammation. Provisions for stipend and training for 6 post-doctoral fellows will be provided annually. Applications for this NIH research fellowship should be made to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Paul C. Kuo, Professor of Surgery (kuo00004@mc.duke.edu).
Grant Title: Translational Research in Surgical Oncology
Funding Institute: National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Funding Institute: National Cancer Institute (NCI)
Although each of the research programs within the Department of Surgery at Duke has a long tradition of excellence in training academic leaders in research, there is an important need for funding for surgical oncologists in translational research, specifically for the laboratory training of the individuals within the training program. This grant will allow for the interdisciplinary training of post-doctoral fellows in translational research. Given the significant numbers of post-doctoral trainees who will focus their careers in oncology, provisions for stipend and training for 8 post-doctoral fellows will be provided annually. Applications for this NIH research fellowship should be made to the Principal Investigator, Dr. H. Kim Lyerly, George Barth Geller Professor for Research in Cancer and Director, Duke Comprehensive Cancer Center (lyerl001@mc.duke.edu).
